Man charged with theft of copper wire from Eircom

A Sligo man has appeared in court charged with stealing 3,700 euro worth of copper wire from an Eircom site in Donegal Town.

Bernard Ward (30) of 2 Glenview Park, Ash Lane, Sligo appeared in Ballyshannon District Court today charged with the theft at Eircom, Drumlonagher, Donegal Town, on November 22, 2011.

Sgt Barry Doyle told Ballyshannon District Court that he had arrested Ward on December 6 and brought him to Ballyshannon Garda Station. Ward made no reply when cautioned.

Ward was released on bail on the condition that he does not enter Donegal except for court sittings and that he must not be in a vehicle with two named individuals. An application for legal aid was granted.

Sgt Doyle told Judge Kevin Kilrane that there are other suspects in the case and that they would be tried before the district court.

When asked by Judge Kilrane did he have a vehicle, Ward replied no and said he got around by walking. He said his wife did not have a vehicle either as she could not drive.

The case was adjourned to January 18.
