Minister for Health Dr James Reilly has confirmed Mammography Services will not be available at Sligo Regional Hospital for at least 12 months - despite promises by Fine Gael that they would return sooner. A lack of trained staff to run the service is being blamed for the dealy.

Mammography services will not return to Sligo Regional Hospital for at least one more year.

The concession has been made by Health Minister, James Reilly who says it has proved impossible to recruit mammography staff.

Speaking during a visit on Thursday to Sligo, Minister Reilly said HSE staff will now be trained to run the service.

Minister Reilly said the funding was available to ensure the service would return, but staffing it was proving an issue which he would resolve by training.

Local protesters heckled Mr Reilly as he made his visit to Sligo Regional Hospital and having refused to meet locals protesting in relation to services at the hospital, the minister did accept a letter from them.

Later he explained that he had been running late and couldn’t meet the protesters as he needed to fulfil the engagements on his agenda for the visit.
