Loss of MEP seat “not the worst thing”

Ireland will still be well-represented at the European Parliament even if we lose one MEP seat next year, according to Independent MEP Marian Harkin.

Speaking in Strasbourg, the Northwest MEP said Ireland will still “punch well above its weight” when it comes to EU representation, even though it is likely that the number of Irish MEPs will be cut from 12 to 11 at the next European elections.

Ms Harkin was responding to a report by the European Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs Committee recommending that 11 member states including Ireland should each drop one seat to facilitate Croatia’s accession into the EU. The Lisbon Treaty stipulates that there must be no more than 751 MEPs in the next European Parliament elected in June 2014, meaning numbers must be slashed to allow for the election of 12 new Croatian MEPs.
