The Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar is the venue for the Stranorlar Electoral Area election count, and while counting got under way at 9am, there’s very little activity at the centre this morning.
To some degree, the excitement has been taken out of this count by Saturday’s tallies, which are pointing to the safe return of the five outgoing councillors.
Sinn Féin’s Liam Doherty is almost a shoe-in for the sixth and final seat.
Naturally, some of the sitting councillors who are at the centre this morning are reluctant to call it just yet, but it’s difficult to see anything other than two Sinn Féin (Gary Doherty and Liam Doherty), two Fianna Fáil (Gerry Crawford and Patrick McGowan) along with Frank McBrearty (Ind.) and Martin Harley (FG).
One other interesting statistic: yesterday’s tallies are pointing to a quota of just short of 1.500 which would be 500 less than in 2009. That’s because candidates are battling for one extra seat this time round.
