Last weekend has seen an increasing interest in the local political scene as councillors debated controversial budget issues in Lifford.
The controversy has far from dampened the interest of aspiring councillors and over the last week there has been increased speculation as to who will be seeking election in May.
Last weekend the well known community activist Niamh Kennedy confirmed to this newspaper that she will be running for a seat in the Co. Council as an independent candidate.
Niamh has been immersed in local politics, involving herself in much of the developmental work that has taken place and is currently Chairperson of the Community Council.
Speaking to the Donegal Democrat , she said, “I wish to make it totally clear that I am not aligned to any political party and am running as a totally independent candidate.,
“It is important that we have an independent voice at the council table and I intend to represent the people without any party whip around my neck if elected. I will be there to voice the opinions of people who want a voice they can depend on.”
