Hands off our maternity services”, a councillor from Donegal is warning the government.
Bundoran Cllr Michael McMahon commented on speculation that maternity services may be removed from Sligo Regional Hospital. He said he “did not believe” Health Minister James Reilly’s reassurances that the “unsubstantiated reports” were “purely speculative”.
“Can you imagine the people of Carrick or Glencolmcille or Donegal Town thinking about going to Galway? We need a complete categorical denial and he hasn’t done that,” Cllr McMahon continued. “The message needs to be given to him very loud and clear. Hands off Sligo Maternity Unit.”
Senator Marc MacSharry called the idea of women from south Donegal having to travel to Letterkenny or Galway for maternity services “totally outlandish.”
A HSE spokesperson said the review of maternity services is not yet complete and is expected to take a number of months. “There are no planned closures of maternity services,” the spokesperson added.
