A Donegal man has pleaded guilty to an incident on Benone Beach in which a four-year-old girl and her mother were struck by his car.

Paul John Doherty, of Ballynahone, Church Brae, Fahan, pleaded guilty to a total of seven driving offences on July 21, last year at Benone beach and at Seacrest Road, Limavady. They include: dangerous driving: driving with excess alcohol at the beach and in Limavady; and failing to stop, report or remain at the scene of the accident.

Defence counsel Joe Brolly told the court the 30-year-old “deeply regrets what happened”.

He said his client would co-operate fully with the probation service and had complied with the terms of his bail.

It was revealed that Doherty has two previous convictions in the Republic of Ireland for dangerous driving.

Doherty was released on continuing bail until March 31.
