Running as an independent candidate, Joe topped the poll with 1,907 first preference votes, the quota being 1,237.

First elected to Meath County Council in 2004, Joe got re-elected in 2009 but this was the first occasion that he came out on top in the 6-seater constituency, where a total of 14 candidates ran.

“I am delighted,” Joe said, “the people of my adopted area, Ashbourne gave me an overwhelming vote of confidence. I have been very active in the local community here since moving from Donegal 30 years ago, I was independent, there was no party whip involved so I can represent the people on an independent basis.”

Joe who ran a posterless campaign paid tribute to his right hand man, fellow Glenties man, TJ Spillane.

“He keeps me on the right path and is a source of great inspiration to me,” he said.
