A former director of Anglo Irish Bank has appeared in court in relation to an alleged €8m fraud.

Wille McAteer of Greenrath, Tipperary Town, but who is originally from Rathmullan was arrested on Monday morning in Dublin along former bank director Pat Whelan of Coast Road, Malahide.

Mr McAteer is accused of fraudulently obtaining a loan for more than €8.2m from the bank to pay off a personal loan with Bank of Ireland in September 2008.

Mr Whelan used to work as the director of lending at Anglo and is accused of being a party to the loan.

Dublin District Court heard both men were met by gardaí by appointment at the Bridewell Station. Neither made any reply to the charges after caution.

Both were granted bail today after the court approved two independent sureties for €10,000 each. They are due back in court in November.
