Fine Gael has selected candidates to contest two of Donegal’s electoral areas in the local government elections.

The party held selection conventions in the Letterkenny and Glenties electoral areas on Sunday. In Letterkenny, at the convention in the Radisson Blu Hotel on Sunday afternoon, sitting county councillor Noel McBride was joined by Letterkenny town councillor Jimmy Kavanagh and Grace Boyle from Churchill on the ticket.

A vote by the delegates present was avoided after Charlie McClafferty withdrew his candidacy.

The Churchill-based publican and undertaker cited family and work commitments as reasons for withdrawing. The party had decided to run three candidates in the ten-seat electoral area. The convention was overseen by MEP Jim Higgns.

Later in Glenties the party selected sitting county councillor Terence Slowey from Ardara and Údarás na Gaeltachta board member John Curran from Falcarragh to contest the Glenties electoral area.

The party was only seeking two candidates from the area and there were no other candidates. Fine Gael headquarters has the option of adding a further name to the ticket before the elections. Insiders say the party may want to add a candidate from Gaoth Dobhair.
