As Ballyshannon awaits the arrival of a specialist team to fix the damaged face of the iconic town clock we bring you some exclusive Donegal Democrat archive material from 1985 when well known local man Michael Gallagher painted the face of the clock using a home made seat and some ropes.

There was no hydraulic lift in sight when Michael, who is also very nifty on his feet (he’s a keen Irish dancer and teacher) gave the clock a facelift.

Michael, from Ballintra, has his own firm now, but in ‘85 he was working for McCosker & Son, Painters and Decorators and he, along with Paul McNern, were tasked with painting the very face of the clock which has now been damaged in the storm.

“We just got on with it, we got our pulleys and ropes sorted and up we went, the view was amazing!” Michael recalled earlier today.

On Thursday the clock face appeared to spilt, caused either by lightening or high winds, and since then the road below has been closed for safety reasons.
