ESB crews on standby over Christmas

ESB has crews on standby for the next few days, following weather-related power outages in Donegal and other parts of the country.

“We’re prepared,” the ESB spokesperson said, saying they have increased resources to deal with the winter weather, including putting staff on standby.

More than 430 ESB customers in the Stranorlar area and more than two dozen customers in each of the Killybegs and Milford areas were without power for much of yesterday afternoon, ESB hoped to have power restored by 6.30pm yesterday.

On Sunday morning, about 9,000 ESB customers around the country found themselves without power as a result of weather-related incidents, though most of those people were in Wexford and west Cork.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann is predicting very unsettled weather for the coming days, with periods of high winds and wintry showers.

Meteorologist John Eagleton said temperatures would be “cold, but seasonably cold”. Temperatures are expected to be milder today, Monday, about 7 to 10 degrees Celsius. Over the next couple of days temperatures are expected to reach only about 4 to 5 degrees Celsius.

Met Éireann is predicting wintry showers tonight, Monday, and on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Wintry showers at night, during freezing temperatures, will fall as snow, though Mr. Eagleton said any snow would generally be expected to clear during the day in most places.

The weather is expected to be quite windy at times, though winds are expected to ease for a time on Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day.

On Sunday morning, a car travelling through the Barnesmore Gap, between Donegal town and Ballybofey left the road, coming to a stop in a stream. Garda and emergency services responded and it is understood there were no injuries.

Donegal County Council has an interactive roads gritting map at www.donegalcoco.ie, providing information on routes to be gritted.

However, council urges drivers to assume that no road is ice-free.
