The impact of the first Donegal marathon in 31 years has been heralded as “brilliant” for the county.

A spokesperson for Letterkenny Chamber, CEO Toni Forrester says the event is also a great showcase of community spirit and involvement.

The half and full marathons, along with a family fun day, all take place this Sunday.

“We think it is brilliant for the county to do it, to host a marathon and to bring so many walkers and runners together.

“It can only be good in terms of profile for the town and for Donegal and we are also hoping for a big spin off from it. Any event like this can only bring benefits,” she said.

Gardaí and race marshals will be working to keep traffic delays to a minimum where possible but diversions will be in place to accommodate the runners between 10am and 11am.

It’s expected the runners will be away from the town centre by 11.15am approximately. Traffic management will be in place at Oldtown Bridge where traffic will be diverted via the Leck Road.

The other main route is the New Mills road where residents will be encouraged to use a circular route to access town, turning out left and crossing at New Mills or Rashedog as opposed to driving back into the Oldtown area to meet runners. There will be marshals on this route as well along with ‘race in progress’ signs.

See www.donegalmarathon.ie for more information on traffic plans or registering for the event.
