Donegal has succeeded in retaining all it’s Blue Flag beaches making it the most environmentally friendly county in Ireland.

The county has also retained it’s five Green Coast flags which really put our clean coastline at the top of the list in the country.

The beaches include Bundoran, Culdaff, Fintra, Downings, Killahoey, Marblehill, Lisfannon, Murvagh, Naran, Magherawarden, Shroove, Rossnowlagh and Carrickfinn.

The Green Flag Coasts include Ballyhernan, Dooey Beach, Drumnatinney, Magheroarty, Port Arthur and Rathmullan.

Paul Diver of the Irish Hotels Federation welcomed the announcement by Minster of the Environment Phil Hogan TD yesterday saying, “This is great news for the tourism sector in Donegal and indeed a great tribute to the many voluntary groups who organise beach cleans on a regular basis.

“It has a particular significance when you consider destruction to our beaches this year brought out about by the storms. This gives us a great green image which tied in with the Wild Atlantic Way is a superb marketing tool.”
