Independent Cllr. Pádraig Doherty has confirmed that he will rejoin Fine Gael.

It has also been reported that the councillor is one of two candidates whose names have been submitted to Fine Gael headquarters for consideration as a third Glenties Electoral Area candidate. Cllr. Doherty said he will not run as an independent if he does not receive the party nomination.

Cllr. Doherty was elected to Donegal County Council in 1999 as a Fine Gael candidate. He ran successfully as an independent in the 2009 local election after not receiving a Fine Gael nomination.

Fine Gael had already selected Fine Gael Cllr. Terence Slowey and Údarás na Gaeltachta board member, John Curran, to run in the Glenties area this year. Cllr. Doherty said that if he is not selected as a third candidate he will support the party’s choices and would not contest the election as an independent.

“It is a very strong field in the Glenties Electoral Area this time around and a large number of candidates, and it is going to be a battle to get a seat,” he said. “So you need as much support as you can get.”

A party spokesperson would not comment on the specific matter, but said the executive council reserves the right to add to electoral tickets as it sees fit.
