Doherty and McBrearty first councillors elected

Gary Doherty of Sinn Fein and Frank McBrearty (Ind) have become the first candidates to be elected to Donegal County Council.

The first declaration in the Stranorlar Electoral Area was made just before 2pm.

Doherty, as the tallies predicted, topped the poll with 1,967 votes. McBrearty also passed the quota with 1,591.

The total poll for this electora area was 10,775; Invalid poll, 147; Valid Poll, 10,628; Quota, 1,519.

Gary Doherty’s 448 surplus votes are now being distributed.

Results of the first count: Crawford (FF) 1,220, G. Doherty (SF) 1,967, L. Doherty (SF) 1,054, Galbraith (FG) 694, Harley (FG) 1,136, Kee (Ind) 434, Kennedy (FF) 303, McBrearty (Ind) 1,591, McCrea (Lab) 228, McDyer (PBP) 237, McGowan (FF) 1,414, McMenamin (Ind) 312, Meehan (38). Gary Doherty tops the poll, Frank McBrearty elected.
