The second oldest priest in the Diocese of Derry was laid to rest last Thursday after concelebrated Requiem Mass in Ballybrack, Moville.
Father Joseph Doherty, who was born in Derry in June 1920, was educated at Rosemount Primary School and St Columb’s College before continuing his studies at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. He was ordained in 1945 and the first two years of his priesthood were spent on loan to the Diocese of Middlesborough in England.
On his return to the Derry Diocese, he ministered in Kilrea, Moville, Coleraine, Killygordon, Greencastle, Keenaught and Lavey before being appointed Parish Priest in Badoney Upper (Plumbridge) in 1976.
After thirteen years as parish priest, he retired and lived in Clar, Donegal Town.
