There’ll be a massive party in Ardara on Saturday night to celebrate Tony Quinn’s incredible achievement in cycling the full 2,000km of the Wild Atlantic Way in ten days.

He’s on the final stage of his marathon solo cycle in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation today.

Tony’s partner Jenny McHugh, of Nancy’s Bar, told the Democrat: “I’m driving along with him in the support vehicle and can’t believe the stamina, drive, determination and pure stubbornness that has pushed him on, especially last week when the weather was utterly miserable, and at times downright dangerous to be cycling in.”

They started in Kinsale on August 25th and have stopped at Mizen, Kenmare, Dingle, Spiddal, Westport, Enniscrone, Ardara and Fanad Head so far.

Tonight they are due to finish up in Derry.

Jenny said: “We are both delighted to have had the opportunity to see the west coast in all its rugged, splendid glory.

“Ireland is an amazingly beautiful country: we have seen spectacular sights. And the people of Ireland are genuinely kind hearted, caring, friendly, and make us proud to be Irish.

“Tony and I have decided we are going to try our best to get back to each of the wonderful pubs, b&bs and hotels that so kindly gave us accommodation and food at no charge along the way.

“This has been the trip of a lifetime, and though at times a test to our relationship, it has left us stronger and better than ever. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m going to be sorry when we have to go back to normality!”

She expressed their gratitude to all those who have supported the fundraiser in any way. “We’d like to thank every place we stayed in, and everyone who has helped us along the way. We could not have done this without the help of our sponsors, friends, family, and the lovely people who put us up.”

To date, the challenge has raised just under €3,000 for the Irish Heart Foundation but the couple hope that figure will rise.
