Independent County Councillor John Campbell is the new Mayor.
The Mountcharles teacher has been a member of the Council since 2011 when he replaced Thomas Pringle TD when he was elected to the Dáil.
Mayor Campbell was successfully returned to the local authority in the recent local elections and was elected as the new chairman at todays AGM of the Council in Lifford.
He replaces outgoing Mayor, Cllr Ian McGarvey.
Thomas Pringle TD has welcomed today’s election of Councillor Campbell as Mayor.
“I’m absolutely delighted on the election of Cllr Campbell as Mayor of Donegal. It was a long drawn-out process but he came through it at the end. It is an honour to have a member of our independent team elected as Mayor and I have no doubt that he will do the people of Donegal proud.
“Throughout the years that I have worked alongside Mayor Campbell I know him to be a very competent individual who has the needs of the local people at the heart of his work. As an independent, he is not bound by the rules of any party which enables him to work towards the betterment of the people and the communities we live in and not the goals of any party. I believe that is what will make his time as Mayor a very honourable one.
“It’s hard honest work and dedication that’s got him to where he is now and I wish him all the best as Mayor of Donegal, I know he will do our county and communities proud,” stated Pringle.
