Local elected representatives and campaigners have welcomed the signing of the Dungloe and Glenties sewerage schemes contract.
The total cost will be about 5 million euro. Pat “the Cope” Gallagher, MEP, said the schemes will provide new wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations and sewers to replace overloaded infrastructure. Works are expected to start in February.
Cllr. Marie Therese Gallagher said the towns have waited decades for the work. “The people of west Donegal have paid a high price for the lack of investment and lack of infrastructure down through the years,” she said.
The Dungloe Sewerage Action Group welcomed the news and the fact that “all potential dangers to public health and the surrounding environments will be removed”. Mr. Gallagher said the schemes will also facilitate residential and commercial development in the areas.
