Fears for the future of Letterkenny’s town centre retail sector has been described as “worrying” by one veteran local councillor.
Cllr Victor Fisher, who also ran ‘Victors’ gift ware shop on the towns main street for many years said there was a need for some kind of “incentive” to stimulate business in the area adding “the town centre is worrying alright.”
Cllr Jim Lynch tabled a motion that a retail evaluation to carried out of both the “old and new” retail sectors of the town.
Cllr Dessie Larkin agreed saying the council “needs the power to offer incentives to attract business to the main street”.
He added that those retailers already trading in the area should be “applauded for the work they are doing to keep the lights on”. He suggested idea such as “pop up” businesses could be an option if the “planning law was there to support it.
