Childcare costs in Ireland create a barrier for parents who want to return to work, according to a report commissioned by the Donegal County Childcare Committee (DCCC) and launched in Dublin yesterday by Minister Frances Fitzgerald, TD.

The national report, “Supporting Working Families -- Releasing a Brake on Economic Growth”, found the annual cost of full-time childcare for a two-child family is €16,500, and examines potential policy options to address the issue.

“With few solutions to this problem proposed until now, this report outlines two policy options for combating this barrier to the workforce, with a particular focus on incentivising the hard hit lower income working families,” said Avril McMonagle, DCCC manager. See page 15 for more.
