Calls to reduce speed limits for summer

There have been calls to reduce the speed limits in the Rossnowlagh area in the summer months, at a Donegal Electoral meeting.

Fine Gael councillor Barry O’Neill said there were concerns in the Coolmore area of the seaside resort, where the speed limit signs were 80 kph.

“Seven months of the year, Rossnowlagh is fairly quiet but from Easter to the summer it is packed with visitors.

“High speeds are not wanted in an area where there are so many families and young children playing.

“Thankfully there have been no major mishaps but the access to and from the beach is also a problem.

“On any day in the holiday period you could have anything from up to 1,000 cars leaving the beach.

And he called for a form of “traffic management for Rossnowlagh for the summer months”.

“I know there was temporary signage for traffic control in the resort for a while last summer but that needs to be put back in place.

“Maybe some bye laws could be looked at in the way Bundoran passed bye laws on car parking in the town.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fail Electoral Area Chairman Sean McEniff, said he was asked to have the 80 kph on the Knather Road reduced to 50 kph.

Fianna Fail councillor Brendan Byrne asked if there was a time frame for the reduction of speed limits countywide.

Fine Gael councillor John Boyle raised the issue of the condition of a road near Ardara.

“All it needs is a twelve inch pipe,” he said.

Independent councillor John Campbell asked if rumble strips could be place on the road into Killybegs as a play area had been opened. And he asked for a Road Design Team to look at the dangerous crossroads of Ballydevitt where a number of accidents had happened in recent times. In reply, Roads Engineer Peadar Thomas said the speed review was an on-going thing and it was not imminent.

Mr Thomas said he would look at the speed limit issues. He said he would also look at the situation in Ardara and Killybegs.

“We decided to have some speed arrangements for the play area in Killybegs but for some reason we were ignored. And he added that the Ballydevitt Crossroads would also be examined, as would the traffic lights in Mountcharles.
