A man has pleaded guilty today to dangerous driving causing the deaths of eight people in an Inishowen road crash in 2010.

In a dramatic turn, the plea came after a jury has been sworn in for the trial of Shaun Kelly charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of eight people in 2010.

In Letterkenny Circuit Court this morning, Mr Kelly of Hill Road, Buncrana, initially pleaded not guilty on his arraignment to a single charge of dangerous driving causing the death of eight people on July 11, 2010, at Kerrigan’s Bridge, on the road between Clonmany and Buncrana.

A six man and six woman jury were sworn in to hear the trial but a short time ago the accused asked to be re-arraigned and entered a guilty plea.

He was released on continuing bail to the December court sitting.

Judge John O’Hagan ordered that medical reports be prepared and invited one representative from each of the victims families to present a victim impact statement at the sentence hearing in December.
