Little Michael McLaughlin has already suffered more than what most people might in their lifetime.

At just two and a half years of age, Michael, who has special needs, suffers from an extremely aggressive and rare form of childhood cancer.

As a result of the illness, he underwent surgery in March and had one of his legs amputated from the knee down.

And only last week, he travelled to Dublin for chemotherapy, only to be sent home again by medical staff because the wound on his leg hadn’t healed enough to allow for treatment.

Michael from Frosses, is affectionately known as ‘Birdie’ and is the youngest son of Kevin and Mary McLaughlin. His battle through illness has won him praise and admiration all around south Donegal. This weekend, the local community will do their bit to help Michael and the McLaughlin family by organising a special fundraising night in the Abbey Hotel in Donegal town.

The event on Sunday night will feature Altan in concert and one of the organisers, Sinead McGowan, who is also a friend of the family, is urging people to come out and support what’s a very worthy cause.

“I have known this family all my life and what they are going through is just beyond belief,” Sinead said. “It’s just heartbreaking.”

Michael is the younger brother of Patrick (three and a half) and Martin (16). His parents were working in the hospitality industry in Donegal town but gave up their jobs to look after Michael.

Their son, who was diagnosed with his cancer - known as Rhabdomyosarcoma - just before Christmas, has a tough fight ahead.

However, the organisers of Sunday night’s event hope that with the public’s help, they can give the family some much needed support at this trying time.
