Bernie O’Callaghan of South West Donegal Community Radio has smashed the previous Guinness World Record for longest radio broadcast. And he did it with plenty of hours to spare.
The veteran presenter and station manager was on air from 10am on Monday to 10am this morning, a staggering 96 hours in all.
This marathon solo broadcast left the previous record, 73 hours of broadcasting by a pair of DJs in Germany, away behind in the distance.
Asked how he felt on completing this mammoth task, he said: “I was great up until a few hours ago, full of energy, but now I feel as if someone has let the air out of my tyres.”
Bernie, who will turn 68 in a fortnight’s time, took on the challenge to raise awarenes of the station and funds for new equipment.
South West Donegal Community Radio broadcasts online at www.swdcrradio.com and at 88.6fm. The station has a massive listenership in Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan and amongst the diaspora across the world.
Bernie, who has more than 20 years experience in radio, presents the South West Breakfast Show from 10am to 1pm three days a week and also presents Mid Week Music on Wednesday night. Another big fundraiser for the station, and for the Kilcar Mill Restoration Project, is coming up soon - a mega concert on October 27 in the Blue Haven featuring The Henry Girls, Tom Byrne, Denise Boyle, Eunan McIntyre and, of course, a special appearance by Agnes and Barney.
