Ballyshannon born Mary Teresa Duffy, (aka Terre) formerly of Donegal Road, Ballyshannon has just sucessfully completed the Intercontinental Asia to Europe 6.5km race across the Bosphprous, Istanbul last Sunday 20th July in an impressive time of 1:16:08.
It’s a very challenging stretch of water with difficult currents to navigate but Mary Teresa is delighted to have completed the race which is now in its 26th year and is organised by the Turkish Olympic committee.
Mary Teresa took a career break from her position as public art manager with Donegal County Council to relocate to Istanbul with her three little boys and her husband Bill Coyle, who was a former manager of Kathleen’s Fall Power Station in Ballyshannon and is currently managing a new power station in Turkey for ESB International.
Sunday proved a pretty good day for the Duffy family. As Terre was making her way across the Bosphorous, her brother, John was playing an important role in assiting the Donegal senior team to an Ulster final win in Clones.
John (aka Manky to his friends in Ballyshannon), is one of Jim McGuinness’s back room team and while we don’t know how good a swimmer John is, we do know he was a class gaelic footballer.
In more recent times John also came to note as a Green Party political candidate in Donegal.
