One south Donegal town will receive an early Christmas present on Thursday with two substantial new businesses opening their doors and yet another in early December underlining the message that Donegal is very much open for business.

Aldi, the major international retailer, will open its doors in the town’s main car park just off the Diamond and the Main Street after months of meticulous work.

A spokesperson for the group, which is the fastest growing retailer in the country, said, “Our goal is simple: ‘to provide our customers with the products they buy regularly and ensure that those products are of the highest possible quality at guaranteed low prices’.”

Meanwhile at the SuperValu Shopping Centre C2, owned by Cara is opening a brand new store just months after opening a smaller version in the centre.

Ramona Nicholas said, “We initially opened the smaller unit as a pilot venture - we simply wanted to gauge the demand and to be perfectly honest the level of business has exceeded all our expectations, so much so that we just had to go bigger and even better.”

Meanwhile in Bridge Street, just off the Diamond, plans to open a large supermarket and delicatessen are well under way with the business expected to open in early December.

Many visitors to Donegal town will have fond memories of Timony’s on Bridge St which was essentially an emporium - it stocked everything from toys to household goods.

Maurice Timony, who has carried on the proud family tradition for years in his smaller convenience store, is now all set to restore the business to its former glory with the opening of a supermarket which will also incorporate a quality deli which will include sit - in facilities.

The astute businessman said, “This is a good news story for Donegal - things are beginning to turn and are on the way up.”
