The man, one of four visitors from Dublin hiking in the Lough Anna area south-east of Glenties, got into difficulties just after 4pm on Saturday. One of the hikers walked back out to a point where there was mobile coverage and phoned 999.

Gardaí in Letterkenny alerted Donegal Mountain Rescue team and team leader Leo Murray got location details from the hiker, who cisent a Google Maps link.

Malin Head Coast Guard also tasked the Sligo 118 rescue helicopter whose winchman on the day happened to be DMRT member John McShane.

The injured hiker was soon located, treated at the scene and airlifted to Letterkenny General Hospital.

The volunteer DMRT team were out again on Sunday, honing their skills in a training exercise with the Sligo 118 helicopter. A major training exercise, with four rescue teams and Army Air Corps helicopters, will take place in the coming weeks.
