A candidate in this years Local Elections vowed to recapture the late Peter Kennedy’s seat for Donegal Town at the launch of his election campaign last weekend.
Michael Naughton to the large crowd assembled that he was determined win back this seat for the Kennedy family in Donegal Town.
Naughton added, “ I would also like to put on the record here tonight, contrary to what people may say, Laghey WAS , IS and always home to me. I wouldn’t ask people to vote for me if I wasn’t going to be living alongside them.
“I grew up with Fianna Fail in my blood, people may ask when did I join Fianna Fail, I never joined Fianna Fail I was born Fianna Fail. The Fianna Fail that I grew up with was for the people that looked after our senior citizens, our young people, people with disabilities,
“We have all seen the ruin of rural Ireland through lack of investment, poor infrastructure, forced emigration and the increased isolation of the elderly – further more by the closure of local Post Offices and Garda stations – the lifeline of many rural communities.
Continuing he said, “They are closing down our local Garda Stations, 139 local Garda Stations have closed down in the last 2 years, our Garda Force numbers have dropped by over 1200, the number of burgles from mobile gangs have left rural communities in terror.
Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has publicly admitted in May 2012 that the closure of rural Garda Stations will impact on Communities and here in Donegal it leaves us more vulnerable as we are so close to the border, leaving our senior citizens living in fear in their homes right across the county
“I am under no illusion of the challenges that we face ahead, yes Fianna Fail made mistakes in the past, we forgot about our grassroots and the people on the ground, these are the people that know what is happening, these are the people I represent and these are the people I will not forget.
“If we work together as a Fianna Fail Family I can assure you that I will deliver an extra seat for the Donegal Town electoral area and I am willing to walk every high road, low road & byroad and I will leave no stone unturned to make sure that when we are back in Donegal Town in the John Bosco centre on 24th May that we are sending 3 Fianna Fail Councillors to the table in Lifford and wining back the seat that we lost in this town since 2005.”
