Finn Valley Leisure Centre scooped a major national award at the Annual Local Authority Members Association (LAMA) Awards Ceremony held on Saturday night in the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
Hosted by Miriam O’Callaghan, there were six Donegal projects on the short list with the magnificent Finn Valley Leisure Centre winning in the ‘Best Community Based Initiative’.
The construction of the Finn Valley Leisure Centre in Stranolar, at a cost of approximately €7m, represents one of Donegal County Council’s recent success stories. Locally driven, the project has embraced high quality design, forward community planning principles and true local partnership in the delivery of this state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility.
Three of the short listed entries were from Donegal County Council and three from Ballyshannon Town Council - Donegal were short listed under ‘Best Tourism Initiative’ with the Donegal Tourism Marketing Initiative, ‘Best Public Building’ with Donegal Women’s Domestic Violence Service Building and under the ‘Best Community Based Initiative’ with Finn Valley Leisure Centre.
Ballyshannon Town Council had a total of three projects short listed ‘Local Sports Club of the Year’ with Marlin’s Swimming Club, Ballyshannon, ‘The Gathering Event of the Year’ with Ballyshannon 400 and in the ‘Council of the Year’ category. In its eight year, the event was renamed as the ‘LAMA Community and Council Awards’ to reflect the spirit of the event, placing emphasis on the unique partnership between local authorities and their communities and ultimately recognising the difference this makes to people at a local level.
The annual awards commends individual, groups and private companies for their outstanding contributions and projects that benefit local communities.
Entries for the awards were submitted last October and short listed down into the finalists in all the 24 categories.
Mayor of Donegal, Cllr. Ian McGarvey congratulated all the entries for making it to the short list and in particular paid tribute to all those associated with Finn Valley Leisure Centre who were successful in winning their category and stated that the centre embraced the local partnership model in its delivery and it was fantastic that it had received national recognition at the LAMA Awards.
Mayor of Ballyshannon and President of the AMAI, Cllr. John Meehan also paid tribute and commended all the Donegal entries and stated that it was particularly nice to see three Ballyshannon projects being recognised on a national platform. These awards are an opportunity to showcase the many projects, which are driven by our local authorities, who by working with their communities, are bringing about positive changes that benefit us all, Cllr. Meehan concluded.
