Heartless thieves who stole presents from underneath a Christmas tree in Ballybofey have been branded “despicable”.
A local councillor described the thieves who stole a laptop and a mobile phone which had been gift-wrapped as “the lowest of the low”.
Cllr Patrick McGowan, Fianna Fáil, said thieves who broke into two houses in Ballybofey on Sunday last were nothing short of “despicable”.
“Two families had their homes broken into. It’s bad enough to have your privacy violated, but for thieves to then steal Christmas gifts, that’s about as low as you can go,” Cllr McGowan, the vice chair of the Donegal Policing Committee, told the Democrat.
A garda spokesperson confirmed that the thieves broke into two houses, got nothing in the first one, but took the electrical gifts from the second. Gardaí told the Democrat their investigations lead them to believe the culprits “are locally based” and have renewed their appeal for information. They have asked the public to help them by contacting: 074-91-37740 or the Garda Confidential line: 1800666111.
Cllr McGowan added: “People here are very annoyed about this and all I can say is everyone hopes that the people who did this are caught and maybe more importantly, catch themselves on and have a serious think about the utter meanness of this act. These people make Scrooge look good, how can they look at themselves in the morning after doing something like this on the days of Christmas.
“But I’m sure the good people of Ballybofey will rally around those who suffered a loss at this holy time of year and offer support,” he added.
The thieves stole the Christmas presents from one of two houses in the Glenpatrick Park Estate in Ballybofey. Both homes were unoccupied at the time of the raids on them.
Both homes were examined by a garda forensics team for clues.
No arrests, have been made and the investigation is ongoing, but the public can help with information using the numbers listed above in our story.
