Speaking at the official opening of the refurbished Waterworld in Bundoran today, Minister of State for Tourism, Michael Ring, commenting on the introduction of Property Tax denied that the public were being bullied into paying, saying, “We don’t have control of our own destiny anymore - it is the Troika that controls this country.
“My grand uncle died fighting for the independence of this country in 1921 and he never would have believed that we would have surrendered it to Europe.
“I don’t like this tax, nobody does but we have to regain our financial independence.”
Minister Ring also commented on the controversy surrounding the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter TD, and said that it was an unfortunate incident which never should have happened.
“It has however been blown out of all proportions - he is a good minister and is one of the most reforming ministers to hold this portfolio.”
On abortion Minister Ring said that he had not as yet seen the legislation and that he would wait and see before expressing his opinion.
“I will back whatever the Government proposes,” he said.
On a lighter note, Minister Ring said, “On this beautiful sunny day in Donegal I have just one request - please give us a loan of Sam this year - it is just about the only thing we don’t have in Mayo.”
