Baby Katie meets Sam in Crumlin

There was ‘Sam’ surprise for one Donegal family when they attended an appointment in Crumlin Children’s Hospital in Dublin on Monday morning.

The Doherty family from Castledooey in St Johnston, Gary and Sarah, enjoyed the game but had to hit the road early on Monday to bring their three-month-old daughter, little baby Katie, to the Children’s Hospital for a check-up.

Wearing their county colours with pride they travelled to the capital.

Once inside the hospital an administrator told them they were expecting a visit from the victorious Donegal team shortly and a wave of excitement ran through the hospital.

Gary explains: “We were up with Katie who is three-months-old and were delighted to meet the team. We had to miss the match in Croke Park the previous day as the check-up was on Monday so it was a wee bonus for us and Jim and the boys were great. We just happened to be standing there in our jerseys and as soon as they came in Jim made a beeline for us.”

Gary said the team told him baby Katie was one of the first Donegal children in the famed Sam Maguire since they claimed the prize after Sunday’s thrilling victory over Mayo.

Jim McGuinness and a number of his heroic squad spent time visiting with children from Donegal and all over the country in what has become a tradition for the All-Ireland winners in recent years.
