Papal Legate meets abuse survivors at Lough Derg

Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Pope Benedict’s representative at the 50th International Eucharistic Congress has met with survivors of clerical sexual abuse at Lough Derg.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Pope Benedict’s representative at the 50th International Eucharistic Congress has met with survivors of clerical sexual abuse at Lough Derg.

During the two hour meeting yesterday, each of the survivors, men and women who represented victims of both institutional and clerical abuse, described what they had suffered and how it had affected their lives.

After the meeting, the Legate, who is also Archbishop of Quebec, celebrated Mass in St Patrick’s Basilica. In his homily, he said the Pontiff asked him to make a penitential pilgrimage to the island to seek forgiveness from God and abuse victims for what had happened in Ireland.

He also stressed the Catholic Church’s commitment to creating a safe environment for children.
