It was very much the case of bittersweet memories in Donegal this week, as the last batch of Emerald Toffees rolled off the production line at the Oatfield Sweets factory in Letterkenny.

The factory, which was opened by Ira and Haddon McKinney in 1927, will close on May 27. Owners Zed Candy will transfer production to a factory in England.

All of the company’s 17 employees are facing redundancy at the factory, which employed 85 staff at its height.
