Garry Jennings wins Donegal International Rally

Garry Jennings has won the Donegal International Rally for the first time.

Garry Jennings has won the Donegal International Rally for the first time.

The Fermanagh driver, who had Glen man, Neil Doherty, on the notes, led from the first stage over Gortree on Friday morning.

His winning margin as he came off the final stage of the three-day event on Atlantic Drive was one minute, 21 seconds.

Second was Seamus Leonard, who was partnered by John McCafferty, with third place going to Derek McGarrity.

Jennings is no stranger to Donegal, having won the Group N category on two occasions. He also won the Donegal Harvest Stages Rally back in October.

Speaking before he headed to the ramp at Letterkenny, Garry said his latest win was the pinnacle of rallying in Ireland.

“Nine years ago I said I was going to win Donegal. And now I have and it’s just unbelievable,” commented the 41st Donegal International Rally winner.

“People said that this car would not work in Donegal, but this is proof that it can. Glen village this morning was the big stage for us in the rally - we were 17 seconds quicker through it,” he added.

“Neil’s father isn’t keeping too well and when we went to see him last night, that gave us a real lift.”

His navigator, Neil Doherty, from Glen, said it was a dream come true for him.

“My father called me on Thursday night and told me he’d hang in for us. I’m a proud son today and I hope he is a proud father. I’ve watched this rally as a child and this is a dream come true for me,” he commented.

After a ding-dong battle with Manus Kelly from Glenswilly, Lettermacaward’s Declan Boyle took victory in the national championship by just 4.4 seconds. Boyle led by 1.4 seconds going into the last stage and was quicker than his rival by three seconds over Atlantic Drive the second time. Third in the national event was Martin McGee.

Sam Moffett took the honours in Group N from his brother, Josh, with Martin Doherty taking third.
