Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Children Charlie McConalogue has called on the Government to take decisive action to tackle costs on working families and make it more affordable for parents to remain in the workplace. He was commenting on the publication of the ESRI report ‘The Costs of Working in Ireland’, which claimed that 44% of working families would be better off on the dole.

“The findings of this report are very worrying and provide further evidence of the financial difficulties facing so many families around the country at this time. While I do not agree with any suggestion that many parents would rather remain on the dole than have a job, I do recognise that the costs for working families in this country are far too high and can pose barriers to some parents remaining in full time employment.

“I am calling on the Government to examine the ESRI’s report in detail and to consider measures to encourage parents to remain in work, ” he said.
