The people of Donegal town and environs are shocked and saddened at news this morning of the sudden death of 13-year-old Aimee-Lee Meehan of Dromore, Mountcharles.

Gardaí confirmed that Aimee-Lee was taken by ambulance from her home to Letterkenny General Hospital shortly after 2am. She passed away a short time later.

The garda spokesperson said that, although they are carrying out the customary investigations surrounding a sudden death, there are “no suspicious circumstances” relating to the young teen’s passing.

“Our hearts go out to her family on their terrible loss,” the spokesperson concluded.

Mr Emmanuel McCormack, principal at Abbey Vocational School, Donegal town, paid tribute to the popular first-year student.

“Aimee-Lee has been a student here since last September.

“She had settled in very well in the school. She was very happy here and was looked after by everyone, especially the Special Needs Assistants who worked with her.

“This is a very difficult time for her family here at the school. There is a whole sense of sadness and shock around the school.

“But we know that it is an even more difficult time for her family at home as they try to come to terms with her sudden passing. On behalf of all the staff and students here, I would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to them and to let them know that they will be foremost in our thoughts and prayers both today and in the weeks ahead.”

As a mark of respect, the school’s awards presentation ceremony, which was due to have taken place tomorrow night, has been postponed to Friday, May 18.
