There were angry scenes at today’s meeting of Bundoran Town Council when a Town Councillor demanded that all politicians judged to have been corrupt as a result of findings of the recent Mahon Tribunal should face the full rigours of the law and face jail.
After proposing her motion to the council that “the Council support the findings of the Mahon Tribunal report and ensure the implementation of the tribunals recommendations and findings”, Cllr. Florence Doherty said, “Every dog on the street, the world and it’s mother knew about the corruption that was going on.
“These people who committed these crimes should be jailed - Fianna Fail has no further standing in this country, these people should be jailed. “
Chairman Cllr. Michael McMahon told Cllr. Doherty that she was out of order saying that she was making a political statement and reminded her that she herself was once a member of Fianna Fail in the past.
Cllr. Doherty was quick to reply , “I resigned because of the corruption and I would also say that this council is top heavy with Fianna Fail. “
Cllr. Sean McEniff commented: “It will be again and I would also remind Cllr. Doherty that Fianna Fail was not the only party implicated in the Mahon tribunal or in earlier tribunals.”
After the meeting Cllr. Doherty clarified her position that anybody found guilty of corruption irrespective of party loyalties should face jail.
