Gardaí, AA Roadwatch and weather forecasters are warning drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads into tonight as a severe drop in temperatures is expected.

Met Éireann is warning of lows of -1 degree Celsius overnight. This represents a 10 degree drop from the mild temperatures we have been experiencing recently.

Donegal Weather Channel warns that black ice may form on roads here from early tonight.

In addition, a gale warning has been issued along coastal routes. AA Roadwatch cautions that cross winds may be a problem on open or exposed roads.

Motorists are also advised to take extra care if going to view the Northern Lights in Inishowen.

Although it is tempting to monitor the sky, you should keep your eyes on the road at all times until you have reached viewing points in Malin Head, Ballyliffin or Shrove. Also delays may be experienced.

Donegal County Council has said that gritters are on standby to treat roads across the county.
