Senator Susan O’Keeffe has welcomed the launch of the North West chapter of the 50:50 group on Monday, January 16.
The 50:50 Group is a single issue national advocacy group dedicated to achieving equal representation in Irish politics. The group is fully inclusive and politically non-aligned. It welcomes both men and women as members and endorses both male and female candidates who support special temporary measures to redress the over-representation of men in the Oireachtas.
Senator O’Keeffe pledged to establish a branch in the North West last year. “I’m delighted to collaborate with women across the North West and to see this group launched,” she commented.
Former Senator, TD and Minister for Education Gemma Hussey officially launched the group, saying it’s an indication of “the frustration women feel at the virtual exclusion of women from national politics.” She called on Minister Phil Hogan to extend the quotas to the local elections in 2014 and called on 50:50 to lobby the Minister to that end.
