A new initiative by the Health Service Executive, which was launched last night in Cloghan, aims to promote health through increased physical activity.

The Green Prescription Programme - Donegal has been chosen as a pilot site for its introduction nationally - involves a health professional’s written advice to a client to become more active in the natural environment as part of the patient’s health and quality of life management. The programme seeks to prevent and tackle obesity and to promote health while reducing stress and increasing self esteem and social well being.

“A Green Prescription provides the opportunities for the synergistic health benefits of Green Exercise and is proven to be a smart, effective and cost efficient way to help people to stay healthy. It provides a natural workout in the outdoors, whilst also providing supported steps towards sustainable healthier life choices,” Health Promotion Officer with HSE Donegal, Ann Marie Crosse revealed.

With increasing levels of morbidity and mortality relating to obesity and levels of physical inactivity, the HSE in Donegal has identified the need for innovative strategies to encourage activity in the sedentary population as well as with targeted at-risk groups. As GPs have access to a large proportion of the sedentary population and are a respected source of advice, they are in an ideal position to become catalysts for change within the lives of their patients, last night’s launch was told.
