There was widespread shock and sadness in Donegal Town at the tragic death on Sunday afternoon of Shane Mitchell (34) of Ballywheel.
Former Town Mayor Tom Conaghan, a friend of the family, said yesterday: “Shane was a very, very popular young man whom I would have known personally. It was so very sad to hear of his death. He was a great young fellow, full of life, with a lot of get up and go.
“Shane was really into rallying and I understand he was quite good at it when he lived in America. Then he came back to Donegal, started his own business and bought a new house out in Ballywheel near his family.
“Shane was the kind of lad who always stayed in touch with his old school friends, even when he was in America, and I know he was still quite friendly with a crowd of them.
“The Mitchells are a great sporting family, very well known and well respected. This is a terrible tragedy for them and our hearts and prayers go out to them.”
Fr Francie McLooone, PP, Killymard said yesterday: “Everyone is really shocked about Shane’s death. The community here are very close and tightly knit so I know all the neighbours will do everything they can to support the family at this very, very sad time.”
Removal from Letterkenny General Hospital took place at 5pm to the deceased’s home. Funeral Mass at St Patrick’s Donegal Town tomorrow (Wednesday) at 11am, with burial afterwards in Killymard.
