Cara Pharmacies raise over €13,000 for charity in 2010!
Cara Pharmacy launched their Cara & The Community inititiave at the start of 2010 with one simple aim - to give back to the communities they work and live in. And they did just that, raising 13,840.43 to be exact for worthy causes and charities throughout the locality and indeed, some throughout the world!
Company Director Ramona Nicholas commented "We really appreciate the support afforded to us by the local communities surrounding all of our stores. Last year we decided we wanted to make a real difference, so we set up Cara & The Community to provide support and much needed funds for charity."
The first beneficiary was North West Hospice for whom an impressive €2130 was raised when Cara Pharmacy joined other businesses in the town to host a Ladies Night Out. The next big event, and arguably the most memorable, was the Tea/Coffee & Pancakes Morning on Pancake Tuesday. There was a great atmosphere as staff and management pulled together to carry out this very successful event for not one but nine good causes. This event alone raised €4,296!
Irish Heart Week took place May 13-16 and Cara Pharmacy held their own healthcare and fundraising event. Cara Pharmacists provided free blood pressure readings, advice on heart medications, cholesterol testing and tips and advice on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. And of course with some healthy refreshments on hand! In total, the group raised €1,978 for the Irish Heart Foundation.
Then one sunny day in July, each of the nine Cara stores hosted an Ice Cream Funday and raised €1,090 for Down's Syndrome Ireland.
The last but certainly not least for event was Women's Health Month in October. Throughout the month all Cara stores had Marie Keating merchandise on sale, information and advice on women's health issues, and a raffle for a ‘Pink Hamper' in every branch. A total of €2,133 was raised for the Marie Keating Foundation which helps fund cancer education and support across Ireland.
Other charities supported by the initiative include the Diabetes Foundation, Irish Kidney Association, Haiti Appeal, Aware, St Vincent De Paul, Cystic Fibrosis, Bailieborough Cancer Fund and many more.
And it didn't stop there! Canice Nicholas, also Director of Cara Pharmacies explains. "We also recognised the value of our time as pharmacists to the local community and we tried to identify different areas where we could be of help. Our pharmacists begun to take an active approach to the needs of local communities and we offered our services to local groups and businesses to provide free information evenings and talks on subjects relevant to them."
Cara also introduced their initiative to recognise other carers in the community with their Carer of the Year Award which wsa presented to Francie McCaffrey at a ceremony in Solis Lough Eske Castle Hotel in September.
Cara Pharmacies also hosted their Caring for the Elderly Week in September, during which there was free tea/coffee and scones for the elderly and where free mini first aids kits were given to senior citizens in a bid to help look after the older members of the community.
Then, when Santa came to visit Cara Pharmacy Bundoran in December, Cara Pharmacy also decided to donate some gifts to St Vincent De Paul.
And what better way to support the community than some of local groups and sports groups. Cara Pharmacy were also the proud sponsors of the Leitrim Ladies Team in 2010 and Tirchonnaill Athletic Club among others.
So after a very busy year, you might wonder what's in store for 2011.
Group Manager, Carole Murray says: "We have huge plans for the Cara & The Community initiative for this year. We have lots of new ideas on different events to run and a host of different charities we are eager to support. Staff and management thoroughly enjoy these events and we look forward to continuing to build relationships within our communities and ‘giving back'.
"Cara Pharmacies also would like to extend a ‘huge thanks to everyone for their support and generosity which helps make each Cara & the Community event a success."
