Counting of ballots has begun for Donegal South West and Donegal North East.

Ballot boxes were opened at 9am and counters are separating the Yes and No votes in the 34th Referendum (Marriage Equality).

Returning officer Liam Ward, in Donegal Town, explained that the number of votes is being counted first, to match against the he number of votes recorded.

Thomas Pringle TD, DCC Cathoirleach Cllr John Campbell and Cllr John Boyle are at the St John Bosco Centre.

Although there are no official tallies, early indications from both constituencies, where six boxes have been counted, are running 55-45 in favour of the Yes vote.

The returns are from Inishowen and Donegal Electoral Areas.

The count on the Presidential age referendum will not begin until the result of the marriage referendum is known.
