The elderly couple found dead this morning at their home in Carndonagh were “the best in the world”, their local priest has said.
A man in his 40s, who was known to the couple, is being held by Gardaí in Buncrana following the grim discovery at the house in Churchtown, on the outskirts of the Inishowen town, at around 9am this morning.
The scene has been sealed off to allow for Garda forensic examination.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been informed and investigations are continuing, a Garda spokersperson said.
Fr Con McLaughlin, PP, Sacred Heart Church, told the Democrat “It’s really heart-breaking, a terrible, terrible thing to happen.
“The couple were the best in the world. Everybody knew them and they were so well respected.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, and their wide circle of friends, as they try to come to terms with this tragedy.”
Cllr Rena Donaghey said people across Inishowen are “in total shock”.
She added: “The couple were both very popular. Everyone is in total shock at the dreadful news.
“I would like to express my deepest sympathy to their extended family.
“I know that the local community will rally around them as they will need all the help and support they can get in the days to come.”
