Kilcar journalist, Aoife Hegarty, has claimed a prestigious award for her work in helping expose the concern over the deaths of babies at the Maternity Unit of the Midland Regional Hospital at Portlaoise.

Aoife and her colleague Janet Traynor from RTE’s Investigative Unit won the “Best Production – National Broadcast Media” Award at GSK Irish Healthcare Media Awards 2014 for their work the Prime Time programme “Fatal Failures which aired last January.

The judging panel said: ‘From a very strong field of entries, the adjudicators were unanimous in their verdict. They described this broadcast as disturbing and shocking, revealing a pattern of failure, with parents’ questions not being answered. It was a local case history with national implications.’

Aoife, a former reporter with the Donegal Democrat/Donegal People’s Press, said she was delighted to claim the award and dedicated it to the families affected by the issues raised in the documentary.

A keen GAA fan she is the daughter of Peggy and Maurice Hegarty, Ballymacfadden, Kilcar.
