The trade of illegal and counterfeit cigarettes and tobacco in Donegal has never been busier, and for the chain of suppliers here it’s a lucrative business.

Illegal cigarettes and tobacco can be purchased in any town or village in Donegal, according to an investigation team working for cigarette company, Philip Morris.

The Donegal Democrat accompanied the team, made up of experienced former officers from the police force in England and the gardaí here, as they spent two days in the county, investigating the illegal trade.

The undercover team carried out ‘test purchases’ of cigarettes and tobacco in a host of towns across Donegal including Letterkenny, Milford, Bundoran, Killybegs, Donegal town and the Twin Towns.
