An Bord Pleanála has overturned a decision by Donegal County Council to grant planning permission for a recycling facility in west Donegal due to its proximity to a Corncrake sanctuary.

The facility for the recycling of construction and demolition waste at Ballyness, Falcarragh was turned down on appeal.

An Bord Pleanála ruled that the facility was too close to the Falcarragh to Meenlaragh Special Protection Area which is designated for the Corncrake.

The board also ruled the site is located in a visually vulnerable area close to areas of high scenic and tourism amenity.

As the facility lacked screening the board ruled it would be detrimental to the high scenic amenity of the general area.

The plans were also considered to constitute over-development of a restricted site.
